Prince of Persia Classic Review
June 25, 2007 by Bryant Crawley

You’re trapped in a dungeon with walls closing in and floors that give away with every step to reveal spikes waiting to impale you. Your goal: get out and save the one woman you love. The problem, other than the traps, is that you only have one hour to save her. What do you do? What do you do? When you think of this situation only 3 words come to mind, Prince of Persia. Now the classic game born in 1989 has been revitalized thanks to the developer Gameloft and publisher Ubisoft. Does this game live up to the original classic or does this remake fall by the way side as so many other classic upgrades do?

This is Tough!

The one thing that this Prince of Persia does share with its classic brother is that the game is tough. This game still holds the title of being one of the first hardcore games on the market. The puzzles and enemies have been changed and rearranged compared to the original but the difficulty is still there. When it comes to the controls, they are hit and miss. The A button controls a number of different functions in the game. It is the button used for jumping as well as parry. The B button is used to crouch/drop and to roll as well as sheathing your weapon (which is really bothersome but more on that later). The X button is used to attack and draw one’s weapon. The problem I had with the controls was that it seemed like all the actions are jammed into two buttons. I wished the developers would have used the whole controller at its leisure. Another problem I had with Prince of Persia Classic is that I never felt that I had actual control of the prince during the entire game. The prince feels stiff in comparison to the younger princes in the series. Any one that has played the classic game before will no doubt be able to handle the controls but gamers who have only played the latest Prince of Persia titles on the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube may be in trouble.

Not your brothers Prince of Persia!

As soon as you load up Prince of Persia, the very first thing you notice about it is the way it looks. Prince of Persia Classic, albeit it’s an Xbox Live game, revivals some 360 games that are out right now. What’s really remarkable is that this game looks very similar to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Cling-Cling

The sounds in this game reminded me of sword battles played out on the big screen. The sounds of swords clashing with one another makes the game come alive with feeling. When you encounter a sword fight in the game, because of the sound quality, you feel as though you are really the prince. This is one area where Prince of Persia Classic excels.

Plasma Sword!

What's going to draw gamers into this game is the difficulty. If there is one thing that held up with this series, it’s the difficulty in the game. Completing all 14 levels within the given time frame is an accomplishment in itself. Not to mention the achievement list that was added. Those 200 gamer points are going to seem like 1500 achievement points after you've earned them.

Classic...

This is one of the rare occasions when an actual remake excels over the original game in the series.  Aside from control issues, Prince of Persia Classic is one well polished game. Gameloft and Ubisoft need to be given a hand for this remake that stays true to the original while standing out on its own.
