American McGees Grimm: Godfather Death Review
September 4, 2008 by Ryan Lodata

The latest game in the Grimm series is titled Godfather Death. Being that it is an episodic adventure, many elements of the previous game have been included, but definitely done in a bigger and better way. Aside from having superb gameplay, the music now holds its own and draws players into the game. However, is this the best Grimm yet?

GamePlay

Once again, players assume control of the lovable Grimm as he goes around the stage converting happy things into much darker, grotesque things. The gameplay elements from the previous episodes are still there, but with a slight hint of an increase in difficulty. This does not mean that casual gamers will have trouble, but advanced players may find themselves sitting back and enjoying the prospect of destruction.

In Godfather Death, players will also encounter the “super buttstomp” power-up for the first time. This power-up enables players to butt stomp anywhere in the stage and stun every cleaner on the map. This certainly helps on some of the larger stages, but can be a little overkill as it continually respawns.

Although Godfather Death may have its pitfalls just like any other game, it is still a blast to come home after a long day of work and make people throw up as you stink up their world. Developers will be hard-pressed to get the gameplay formula as refined as Spicy Horse has by this point.

Sound

One of my biggest complains about the series has been the in-game music. Well, Spicy Horse has heard my call, yet again, and provided some pretty respectable music. I actually found myself being further entranced by the game through the provided music. At last, you can put your mp3 player to rest for Godfather Death.

Graphics

Out of every category that we score for, I would never have been expected to be further “wowed” by the graphics in Grimm. Everything is just as crisp and sharp as ever, but with an even darker twist. The graphics alone in Godfather Death have made me even further anticipate the next episode’s release.

PlasmaFactor

I may have really liked the series before, but now I absolutely love it. Godfather Death has brought the creativity of the Spicy Horse team to light and in a wonderful way. One would never expect to see this caliber of graphics and gameplay in a game that can be downloaded for free or on the cheap.

Conclusion

Godfather Death is sure to please fans of the series with its further improved gameplay variables, music and graphics. Those of you who may not have picked up the series yet, should definitely find the time (or money if you download it after the first 24 hours). This series is absolutely fantastic and Spicy Horse keeps me wanting to come back for more. Keep in mind that each episode is available for free within the first 24 hours at GameTap.com. If you have a subscription, however, its free for as long as you are a subscriber. Go and grab it, you won't be disappointed.
