Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil Review
November 19, 2005 by Christian Costa

by Christian Costa - November 19, 2005 When I say Doom, what do you think of? The apocalypse? Death? Your Hamster getting out of the cage? Well all of these are correct and you have Doom 3. Now add the hamster multiplying to make tons of baby hamsters doing their business all over your bedroom floor, you now have Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil. This game is the scariest game of all time next to the Michael Jackson Moonwalker videogame. Two years after Doom 3 the UAC returns another Marine team to search for a light beacon going off near some scientists stationed on Mars and to research it. Viola you have death, destruction, mayhem, and of course big guns and even bigger demons. Id Software Inc. really outdid itself on this one because they fixed some of the Doom 3 bugs and even added two new guns and six new very heart murmuring demons.

My hands started shaking

Ok when I played this game I nearly dirtied my pants. The gameplay blew me away. From the very start it teaches you everything that you need to know. Crouch, shoot, move, etc were very easy. The control sensitivity at first was sluggish so I had to move it from a 5 to a 7 (ultimate killing speed for any online game) and I kicked every demon I came across from then on. When you get other guns like the grabber, chain gun, shotgun, etc. you can make a shortcut for them on the D-pad as well. This really helps especially when there are swarms of many different demons coming at you. The gameplay also uses some sort of strategy when you are running down the hallway looking for things to shoot. The demons who throw fireballs at you, you can use the gravity gun to grab the fireball, turn the fireball around, and shoot it back at them. Its awesome though it takes a skill and speed to use the grabber gun. It isnt that great except for those cases because it has a long reload and you can only use it for a certain amount of time before it over heats. And the chain gun is just plain fun in a room full of demons! The double-barreled shotgun however can be used to drop pretty much anyone and everyone, just get close and its dead. The ability of using demon powers also make the game a lot smoother and easier. You can once again go Berserker mode and even slow down time so that you can run up right up to any demon in the middle of attacking you and drop it with a nice shotgun blast to the face. Without that the game would be amazingly too hard and scary.

The bread and butter

The graphics are by the far what makes this game. It is plain to see that no other game, not even Halo 2 can compare with Doom 3: Resurrection of Evils graphics. The demons look like their flesh is burning and pumping full of blood ready to kill you every second. If you shoot someone the blood splatters on the walls and floors with amazing precision. The second reason this game is so scary is because of its amazing graphics. The lights flicker on and off not leaving much to the sight and the way they use the graphics help you figure out something bad is going to jump out at you but you dont know for a fact. The flickering lights really help freak you out. The fire is the only problem I have with this game graphically. It just looks like some sort of orange gas. The game also introduces hallucinations that you get at random. These hallucinations also make good use of the graphics because you can be standing in a dark tunnel and then all of a sudden in the middle of hell. It creeped me out. And of course something then began attacking me in the middle of the hallucination (not very clean fighting). This game definitely utilizes XBOXs graphics to the full potential.

Please stop me

The graphics may be the second scariest part to the game but the sound is by far the scariest. Right from the start every annoying/horrifying sound you can think of fills your brain. From whispering to screaming it all mixes together and coincides as you walk towards a poorly lit door. Dun Dun Dun But nothing shows up behind the door so you are happy. Thats when you hear it! The demon breathing down your neck and screeching for flesh behind you. See the sounds made you think something bad was going to happen, nothing did so you were relieved but then Doom decided to be jerks and scared the pride right out of you even more! The music doesnt help either. It can go from a violin to a screeching guitar in a matter of seconds depending on what is about to kill you. It was amazing. I have not seen a scarier video since Paris Hilton hit the internet. It was intense and breathtaking. The sound is by far the best part of this game, hands down. Some of the best I have heard in a long time.

Well duh

This game was super crazy wicked happy fun! Well most of the time. I find it very amusing shooting big demons with big guns. It is just a huge adrenaline rush. Not to mention my future career. The only problem I had was that I jumped out of my chair and on to the floor too many times. Scary surprises are nice but not every five minutes. I am lucky enough that I didnt have a stroke, seizure, heart murmur, and tetanus from this game. It also comes with online play where you can shoot fellow demon hunting marines much like yourself. Its not great but its fun. It doesnt have too many guns or powerups. It is a very simple multiplayer but fun nonetheless. You also cant play co-op in the campaign unless it is online which doesnt help when you have another person next to you wanting to play.

Straight up old-school

What is your favorite PC game of all time? Final Fantasy 7 perhaps? Maybe Warcraft? Well whatever you like is up to you but I know for a fact there are legions of players with the same answer as myself, Doom 2. That is right Doom 2 owns all. And Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil happens to have Doom 2, Ultimate Doom, and Doom the Master Levels playable on it. After scaring myself pant-less I decided I just wanted to shoot stuff so I decided to play Doom 2. Its like Grandmas cooking when I started. I was playing back again when I was 12 years old. This is one of the few games that have the main title and then all the other past games of the same title. It is awesome! There is nothing better than opening a room full of demons when you have the BFG. Ahhhh!

Id Software= on point

Id Software Inc. I salute you for making an amazing game full of horror, suspense, big guns, and awesome game play. You did a great job with Doom 3. But you did an even better job with Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil. This will go down in history as the scariest/greatest game for a long time. Doom I love you though I know you want to feed on my flesh!
