E3 2005: Epic\'s New Unreal Engine
Posted December 31, 1969 by Adam Gainer
Epic Games showcased their new game
engine for the next series of Unreal games at E3 2005 in Los Angeles,
California.
Epic Games, developers of the Unreal series, gave a demonstration of their Unreal 3 game engine. The new updated engine will be used in their new game Unreal 2007.
Even though this engine?s graphics are extremely impressive and will
look amazing on the next generation of high end video cards. The new
engine has a lot of lighting, physics, and particle manipulation which
will make this engine true eye candy for any gamer. This engine has
been sold to be used in games other than the Unreal series.
Some of the updates to the engine is that levels will be streamed in so that there is no loading lag and puts less strain on the RAM. The real time rendered graphics will reflect light, and take into account different gravities. During the Demo they drove a version of the scorpion vehicle. Watching this vehicle vibrate because of the engine running looked very impressive. The test environment ran flawlessly from one portion to another with no notice of any change. The gravity effects in this game are incredible. Falling objects will bounce and roll until they stop. Weight is dead and things will drop immediately to the ground unless they are being held. The rag doll physics are very realistic as characters can move extremely lifelike and move based off of actual join connections. Objects in motion will stay in motion as long as they keep being interacted with. There was also a demonstration of different gel physics in which it will slow down movements or speed them up. There was also a demonstration of liquid movement effects, these actually flowed well and had fluid motion which retained real physical properties. The new physics engine is extremely impressive and realistic. The physics allow for fluid snake like movements of swinging pipes and ropes. When players knock an object over the contents inside will still move and roll around. Items have very real center of masses. If an object becomes unbalanced it will tip over, objects in motion will also stay in motion. The collision physics are also updated as they will react naturally as two objects would. Particle effects also are a huge part of the game. If a fire is near an object embers from the fire may incinerate their surroundings. The new lighting system is also highly detailed realistically illuminate their environments. Unreal also came up with a new visual editor that they are releasing with their new engine. In this new editor it will make it easy to replicate different textures and colors. Even thought the graphics are incredibly detailed there is actually less steps to creating objects, this means that there will be less information and less process to rendering different items. This means that games will be able to contain more content, load faster, and be less tasking on system resources. These new features are all made for high end P.C.?s and future consoles. |
