Nintendo\'s Upcoming Console This Year?
Posted December 31, 1969 by Scott Parrino
After months of keeping a secret, Nintendo finally released information on it?s next generation console. It is a new handheld that is designed not to compete with the Game Boy Advance. They code-named it the Nintendo DS. DS stands for ?Dual Screen?. Here is what GamePro had to say:

"Code-named the Nintendo DS, the new system sports two 3-inch backlit LCD screens. The two screens can be combined into one large screen, or split to display different information, giving players as much information as possible without cluttering the screen."
What does this mean? Well look at it this way, you are able to multi-task I believe on certain games, like RPGs, sports, etc. You can use one screen to play, while the other screen displays stats. Can this be a step in the right direction however? I believe so. This new handheld will allow players to play their games more efficiently as they will not have to pause and check menus, rather they just peek over to the other LCD screen.

You are all probably wondering what this odd design would look like. Well, I would like to know too. There has yet to be any official release to what the Nintendo DS looks like, however, after doing some searches, I found some ideas created by enterprising artists who thought what they think it would look like. Here is my favorite:

I myself being a Nintendo fan and hearing the news of a ?next-gen console?, I got excited. However when I found out that it was a handheld, I was slightly disappointed. But the more that I thought about it, this was something made to compete with the increase of handheld developments like the Nokia N-Gage, and Sony?s upcoming PSP. But according to rumors, it?s release date will be made to compete with it?s opponents Microsoft and Sony when they release their next generation console. Whether it is handheld or console, I will always root for Nintendo to win this new front in the war of the game systems.
