The NPD Group is at it again with its monthly sales figures for North America. Hardware sales as a whole garnered a collective 472.28 million dollar revenue for the industry during the month of September which runs from 8/30 to 10/3. The Nintendo DS continues to print money for Nintendo and gains support from developers from across the nation giving the platform a huge library of games to choose from.

Analyst Anita Frazier commented on the indsutry as a whole.

"All three console manufacturers enjoyed the impact of lower prices on unit sales as the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 realized an increase over August of 87%, 33%, and 31% respectively, on an average sales per week basis (keeping in mind September was a 5-week month compared to 4-weeks in August)."

"Compared to last September, the PS3 was the big winner, more than doubling last year's sales," Frazier notes, pointing to last September's less than impressive fifth place finish for the PlayStation 3. "This portrays a very strong consumer reaction to the price decrease as August and September both realized a lift of more than 70% over the prior month."

With the price drop and release of the Slim Playstation 3 to $299, it's apparent that Sony wants to get back in the running against the Xbox 360. We also have news about the software side of things below, so click on to read more.

September was an interesting month for software releases. For a moment, Wii Sports Resort which was released back in July has done well ahead of the competition. However, Microsoft's exclusive Halo 3: ODST came into the front and completely blew away Wii Sports Resort selling at 1.52 million units.

Another surprisingly stat to notice is the fact that The Beatles: Rock Band outsold Guitar Hero 5, looks like all you can say to that one is "All You Need is Love".
