Eat, Sleep, EverQuest: Episode 1
Posted December 31, 1969 by Jody Ingram
In 1998, something to finally rival any and all Ultima Online players was released in the form of a game called EverQuest. No one knew it would become as big as it is today; it just happened. How does something like this get so big though? It all starts by creating a character.
Creating a character in EverQuest may seem like an easy thing to do, but in reality, it?s a lot harder than it seems. If you own the Shadows of Luclin expansion, creating a character becomes very complex, as you are now able to select more facial creation options. These include the eyes, hair, etc. After selecting what gender your character is, his race, and customizing his look, you?re now left with two more tasks ? class and deity. Now, before we go on, I want to tell you about these races.

EverQuest is divided into race classes so to speak ? we have the small class (dwarves, gnomes, halflings,) the medium class (wood elves, high elves, humans,) and the tall class (barbarians, vashir, etc). After deciding how you want to play your character out by its race, you then select it and customize the look for him or her. Next, you?re left with selecting the class. Each race has different stats to go into each class. For example, humans have great strength at start, while elves are weak. Given this information, you?re probably going to select a human for a warrior other than an elf. On the other hand, elves have high wisdom at start; so selecting one as a druid or ranger would be a better idea, right? It really depends on how you want to play. If you don?t mind playing to pick up lost stats, you?re good to go on any race and class combination you want. In the EverQuest, this is one and only way to go.

For games like Ultima Online, you?re able to select a race that will let you carry on all of the given specs for your class. In EverQuest, you have to work and gain those. Even if you?re a human ranger, with enough strength to lift a house; what good will that do you if you?re not smart enough to find it first? EverQuest?s attributes are divided into several categories as with any RPG. We have strength, stamina, agility, dexterity, wisdom, intelligence, and charisma. As I said above, each race will have high points in some and low in others. That is just something you have to work out. You now have to select you?re religion (deity). After all is said and done; an EverQuest character is born into the magical world of Norrath. Now that he is a fish in the sea, just what does he have to do? A lot.

It all started out with one simple task in mind -- the task of being a powerful and brilliant ranger in the eyes of Tunare. How do I go about doing this? Plan my character out very carefully. Entering the Veeshan server, I select my gender (male) and my race (wood elf). The default look for wood elves, although cool, is just not for my shining fighter ? I need something prettier. Just how should my elf look though? I guess it really depends on the type of player I feel like being. Should I be evil ? attacking and dueling everyone with the red name above my head or should I be caring ? healing and buffing anyone that needs it in Norrath? Really, I would much rather take a neutral role ? it just seems to easier. Doing so, I?m able to do what I want when I feel like it. Blue eyes and shaggy brown hair seem to fit my ranger well. Of course I?ve already decided on a ranger, I now select that class. Now it?s time to add points.

Wow, I have 30 points to distribute into any attribute I want, but where should I put them. You could take the easy way and randomly select stats, or you can do like me and learn about what each one does and how they can be used to the best of the ability for your character. With those 30 points, I divide them up ? 15 to strength and 15 to wisdom. Even though my ranger already started with a lot of wisdom, having too much is never a bad thing. On the other side, putting those into strength really helped him. Next up, selecting Tunare for my Deity is what I have to do ? since I planned it from the start. Now it?s time to spawn. Welcome Norrath, I am Veekan!
